Where did you get that hat?!

Updated: Sep 22

Rothbury Rubbish Friends meet once a month for a community litter pick. Today, Cynthia arrived wearing a fantastic hat. I asked her where she got it from.

'I made it, out of plastic bags from Rogerson Shoe Shop' she told us, as we were all admiring it. She took it off and showed us how it folded up very small. She passed it to me and I felt how soft it is.

'How did you make it?' I asked, amazed (I am not good at making stuff, and so admire those who can).

'Oh, it was easy, I cut the bags into strips, and crocheted them', Cynthia told us, modestly.

The Rothbury Rubbish Friends were all amazed at the ingenuity, and Cynthia's modesty. It really is a unique and stylish hat!

There were only 6 people today who turned up for the community litter pick, and all of us are RRF, which means that we have our own litter picking equipment, and try to keep the areas around where we live as clear from litter as we can, all the time.

Monthly Community Litter Picks

The monthly litter picks, however, are an opportunity for anyone in the community to join in and help keep our beautiful village litter free.

We choose Saturdays for these events, so that children may be able to help, though very few do join in, unfortunately. I know the children care about litter-picking, though, and we have given all of our schools litter picking equipment.

Today the main things we found were plastic bottles, glass alcohol bottles, broken glass, food wrappers, and, as always, that delightful fruit, the dog-poo-in-a-bag, hanging from all kinds of bushes. Another problem we find all the time is the cigarette ends all over the pavement, especially near bins. It is a constant surprise that people do not put the butts in the bin, after stubbing them out on the top.

Besides it looking horrible, birds do pick these up and eat them.

It has been very kind of the local pubs and cafes to offer those on the Community Litter Pick a free cuppa afterwards. Today we had a lovely coffee in The Queens Head. Thank you so much to them, it was great!

Why don't you join us next month, on Saturday 19th October? (Weather permitting - keep an eye on our FB page). We supply everything you need, and you will feel very good afterwards, as you will have done a good turn and had an hour's walk.

The Turks Head has very kindly offered us a free cuppa afterwards.
