Our Great Big Green Event 2025, and what happens next...

The very first national Great Big Green Week was in a September. Then it changed to June - but we in Rothbury stuck to September, as it seemed to work.

In 2025 we had no option, in September, to go for Saturday 20th. No other option was possible in September - so we, reluctantly, went for it.

Reluctantly, as it clashed with Thropton Show. Our event started at 10, however, and the show at 12. But this was definitely not ideal.

Quite a few folk called in to see what was going on, and of course, having a cuppa and one of Teresa's wonderful cakes, before heading off to the show.

Our Event was very well attended, and we had, probably, the best conversations we have yet facilitated.

The Missing Lynx Project, and Newcastle University's Amenity Grass Project

ree

Some members of Rothbury CAN visited the Missing Lynx Project earlier in the year, and we were struck by the amount of information they have collated. Although we have, as a group, no position on the suggestion of reintroducing Lynx, we can see that it is something which should be openly discussed, with people who are researching helping to inform.

The Amenity Grass project is something we totally support, and it was wonderful to have Tom and Darren on hand to explain what this entails, and get people's views. A group from Rothbury CAN are working with Rothbury Parish Council to continue the discussion and project within our town.

The theme of this year's Event was WATER. We had a photography competition with some wonderful entries. Many thanks to Susan Barwood and Susan Aynsley for judging.

We showed a wonderful short film which provoked a lot of discussion

We also held a film screening, which was attended by 70+ people. As our theme was WATER, what better film than David Attenborough's OCEAN?

ROTHBURY CAN'S GREAT BIG GREEN EVENT, 2026

We have decided to move the film screening and Event to earlier in the year. This aligns better with the national Great Big Green Event. Dates for your diary: Great Big Green Event: Saturday 30th May 2026 Rothbury CAN Film Screening: Friday 5th June 2026 (film to be announced).
